Our company has hired several women in our predominantly male environment. Some, like myself, have had first-level promotions. But we still have no women in senior positions. When those positions come up mostly men apply. Or, when women do apply, they are clearly not making it through the selection process. What’s happening and how do I get a promotion?

What’s happening and how do I get a promotion?
My team has worked together for a long time and have developed nicknames for each other, often based on ethnicity, such as Italians, Greeks and so on. Some are funny, so I smile. As a racialized person, however, deep down I don’t like the practice or the name given to me. How do I handle this?
For Halloween our Administration Office has a fun event where we dress in costumes. A couple of this year’s costumes did not sit well with me as a Black person, because they involve non-Black people adding color to their faces so they appear closer to my skin color. When I pointed out that this is racist, colleagues said I’m being over-sensitive. Am I wrong in feeling this way? How do I handle this?
I’m one of a few Black people on our job site. From mine and others’ experience, Black people in this company carry a huge burden to ‘ represent our race’. Even in the face of racist treatment we feel that if we allow our true emotions to show, it will reflect badly on all of us and may even cause the company to hesitate in hiring Blacks. So, we try harder and harder to be the ‘good Black people’. How do I work with this burden?
