During the summer of 2020, at the height of the social justice movement, support for Black Lives Matter hit a high, with 52% of people of all races surveyed saying they supported the issue. But as time wears on, that level of support appears to be dropping steadily.

For my mother’s 60th birthday, I told her the least I can do is be there. She appreciated the sentiment, but said “it’s fine” if I missed it. After all, I’d already visited her in Manila twice in the last year: first for my stepdad’s 75th, then again for my 27th. I flew from New York each time, rationing vacation days and working from the homeland as best I could.
Striving to increase workplace diversity is not an empty slogan — it is a good business decision. A 2015 McKinsey report on 366 public companies found that those in the top quartile for ethnic and racial diversity in management were 35% more likely to have financial returns above their industry mean, and those in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15% more likely to have returns above the industry mean.

Workplace bullying is a serious problem that can deeply affect the mental, physical and financial health of the bully’s target (the person or group the bully abuses). The Canada Safety Council reports that in the workplace, one person in six has been bullied and one in five has witnessed a co-worker being bullied.

These two jokes represent disparagement humor – any attempt to amuse through the denigration of a social group or its representatives. You know it as sexist or racist jokes – basically anything that makes a punchline out of a marginalized group.
Earlier this fall when Justin Trudeau, the country’s prime minister, was exposed for having appeared — on various occasions — with his skin browned and/or darkened, Ryerson professor Cheryl Thompson was called on to comment about the things we remember and the things we forget and the largely untold history of blackface minstrelsy in Canada.
The 100 or so costumed guests at the Halloween party were in a big rented hall in Edmonton huddled in groups, sipping beer and chatting when the lights went out. The opening strains of a Gladys Knight and the Pips song came over the speakers and a spotlight turned on, illuminating a group of young men who twirled and danced into the room lip syncing the song’s lyrics. One wore a red evening gown and a wig, the others were in rented tuxedos. They, like nearly everyone else in the room, were white law students at the University of Alberta. And they had painted their skin black as part of their costumes.
