The Incident
I am a Black person. My co-worker just used the n-word in conversation. What should I do?
Quick Steps
1. ASSERT (in your mind): The n-word is racist.
2. ASSESS: Is this the time, place where I can say something now?
3. ARTICULATE: Examples: [Adjust wording per context].
“Did I just hear you say the n-word?”
You just used the n-word in your conversation. That’s not OK…”
“I’m sure you don’t mean to be racist, but the n-word is derogatory. I feel an apology is in order”
“That word violates human rights laws. Using it is not acceptable…”
4. ACT:
- Are they receptive? Allow space for apology—to you and others who heard.
- Are they resisting? Decide if you want to take this on. Leverage support of others. Stand firm.
- Do you fear taking this further? Don’t blame yourself: he is in the wrong. Protect yourself. Don’t internalize. Approach someone with power to take this further.
